BMW's new-generation M3 and M4 performance models are expected to launch in 2020 with more power, less weight and increased structural rigidity, and these photos of an M3 test mule circulating the streets of Munich give a glimpse of the car that will reputedly stop the 0-100km/h clock in less than four seconds.
It's sensible to assume the M3/M4 engine will be powered-up similarly to the just-revealed X3 and X4 M SUVs (SAVs in BMW-speak) which, with the help of water injection, extract 353kW/600Nm from the revised 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline six-cylinder M-spec engines – and up to 375kW in Competition-spec models.
Couple this to an expected weight loss averaging around 65kg, better aerodynamics, reworked suspension and reputedly a more rigid body, and the next-gen M3 sedan and M4 coupe/convertible should be altogether faster and more dynamic than the current models.
While the new 3 Series core M models will be eight-speed autos driving through BMW's xDrive AWD system, it will also be possible to snare stripped-back, rear-drive, six-speed manual-transmission Pure-badged models as well.
Although the all-new seventh-generation BMW 3 Series is due to launch in Australia in March 2019, it will be a longer wait for the M3/M4 models, which are not due to make an international debut until 2020, following an initial public exposure at the Frankfurt motor show in September this year.
