SPY PICS: Genesis G70 Shooting Brake surfaces

Slinky new Genesis G70 wagon spotted and it’s odds-on to come to Australia

Why do you need a wagon when you can have an SUV? Respect.

Genesis wants to be seen a genuine rival to its European peers, including Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, and it hopes to achieve this by offering a new wagon variant of its lauded Genesis G70 mid-size luxury sedan.

After much speculation and the odd render – including this one from Kolesa.ru – new spy pics of a G70 wagon (or shooting brake, estate or avant, depending on the brand) snapped in Germany confirmed Hyundai's premium brand will in fact have an answer for the BMW 3 Series Touring.

Unlike Australians, Europeans still buy wagons in ample volumes  and Germans have a greater appetite for them than almost any country, ensuring they continue to be produced by the biggest prestige car-makers.

While Aussies have forsaken the humble station wagon for the high-riding SUV, and the BMW 5 Series Touring recently became the latest wagon to disappear from local showrooms, Genesis Australia sounds keen to offer the new model.

“Whilst we can confirm that a G70 Shooting Brake concept is being evaluated, no decision has been made yet as to whether it will go into production,” said Guido Schenken, Genesis Motors Australia’s senior PR manager.

“Given G70 is already produced in right-hand drive, a shooting brake variant would be a viable and great addition to the G70 range in Australia, if it were to make it into production.”

These spy pics suggest development is of the Genesis G70 wagon, which will likely get the ostentatious ‘shooting brake’ moniker, is well underway.

Expect similar engine choices to the G70 sedan, in the form of 2.0-litre four-cylinder (179kW/353Nm) and 3.3-litre V6 (272kW/510Nm) turbo-petrol engines.

The major difference will be the extra boot space in the back and it’s expected the new model will be cost less than the Genesis GV80 SUV – which offers diesel power – that arrives here late in 2020.

It's likely the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake will be released as part of the upcoming facelifted G70 line-up, but whether that happens this year or next remains unclear.

Genesis is currently expanding its small retail footprint in Australia by adding its first local test drive centre in Sydney this week, with Melbourne and Brisbane locations due to join its single Sydney CBD 'studio' later this year.

Wagon lovers, watch this space.
