Is this our first peek at the Ford Mustang Mach 1?
Confusion reigns over whether this disguised mule snapped by spy photographers in the US is indeed the remodelled classic originally expected to appear in 2021, or a final iteration of the high-demand, hi-po Bullitt variant.
Although it has been believed for some time the Bullitt version would be retired with the 2020 model year to make way for new-generation Mach 1, rumour now suggests the Steve McQueen-inspired pony car may continue.
As for the Mach 1? Speculation has it Ford is considering that moniker for its upcoming electric SUV.
The theory goes that this may leave the Bullitt name open for reconsideration as Ford goes ahead with developing a high-performance niche Mustang.
The disguised Mustang starring in these spy shots doesn’t tell us a lot except that it’s clearly a V8 (albeit with massively-protruding dual exhausts, rather than quad exhausts) and runs Brembo brakes along with more aggressive wheels/tyres.
If there are any styling changes they are difficult to detect – although looking at the lenses in the lower front light clusters suggests there may be some of the requisite re-profiling of the lower bumper area.
Whatever nomenclature Ford decides to adopt, the exclusive niche Mustang is expected to make its US debut later this year.
The Steve McQueen-inspired Ford Mustang Bullitt was imported to Australia in limited numbers from September 2018 and came painted in Dark Highland Green, complimenting 19-inch Torq Thrust-style alloy wheels and numerous exterior highlights.
It was an instant hit that required Ford Australia to run a ballot for the final 10 vehicles, along with an obligation by buyers to keep their cars for a specified time.
