Jeep’s new-generation Wrangler two-door has emerged in spy shots just as full US specifications were leaked by enthusiast website JL Wrangler Forums.
The new Wrangler images and details – including the option of an electrically-folding soft-top roof for the first time – follow spy shots of the next Wrangler four-door last month and the first Jeep Wrangler ute in June.
Jeep’s 2018 Wrangler will make its world debut at or before the Los Angeles motor show in late November, and both the new American off-roader will be available in Australia in both two-door and long-wheelbase (Unlimited) four-door forms next year.
The all-new four-door, dual-cab Jeep Wrangler pick-up will follow it on sale here by early 2019.
As you can see from these latest shots, the next Wrangler will continue the unmistakably boxy styling of its predecessors, but subtle changes like a longer bonnet and ‘faster’, fixed windscreen attempt to make it more aerodynamic.
New equipment details from US dealer sources confirm that, along with less weight due to more aluminium in its chassis construction, a revised range of engines will also help make it more efficient, and they will be joined by a number of new roof choices and option packages.
Now confirmed – at least for the US market -- is a three-engine line-up, opening with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol ‘Hurricane’ four-cylinder with starter-generator, a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel and, once again, Chrysler’s Pentastar 3.6-litre petrol V6, all matched with six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.
The current Wrangler is available in North America with 13 different configurations, but this number will be slashed for the new generation, which will bring Sport and Rubicon versions of the Wrangler, and Sport, Sahara and Rubicon versions of the Wrangler Unlimited. The latter will come standard with a full-time four-wheel drive system.
In contrast, up to 10 options packages will be offered in the US, including the Electronic Infotainment System Group, Technology Group and LED Lighting Group, which could be standard on Sahara and Rubicon variants.
More roof options than ever before will be available too, including a traditional soft-top – now with the option of a power-retracting function – and a three-piece hard-top in black or body color.
Inside, depending on the variant, the 2018 Wrangler will come with fabric, ‘premium’ cloth or leather seat trim, and other options will include an Alpine sound system and ‘Trail Rail Management System’.
No pricing has yet been announced for the US, let alone Australia, where the existing Wrangler line-up is priced from $38,990 and includes the Wrangler V6 Sport and Overland, and the Wrangler Unlimited CRD Sport and V6 Sport, Overland and Rubicon.
