Subaru WRX STI Kuro special edition lobs

High-performance turbo sedan gets unique visuals; just 50 units of the new WRX STI Kuro coming to Australia

There's a new collectible turbo-boxer hot-four available in Australia and it's called the Subaru WRX STI Kuro.

Priced at $59,904 not-including on-road costs, the new limited edition WRX STI Kuro – which means charcoal – adds crystal black highlights on the rear wing spoiler, door mirrors and antenna, adding a touch of JDM goodness to the visuals.

Matching gloss black 19-inch alloys wheels with silver Brembo calipers finish the unique exterior visuals, along with a matte black WRX badge and Kuro Limited Edition badge on the car's rump.

Priced $1800 above than the current WRX king, the Subaru WRX STI spec.R, the special edition Soobie Kuro gets the same Recaro sports seats as the $58,140 spec.R model but upgrades the leather steering cover to a motorsport-inspired 'ultrasuede' finish.

Other upgrades include an STI 'push-start engine switch' along with a numbered 'Kuro' build plate.

Could this be one of the last special editions before an all-new model arrives?

The new model is limited to just 50 units and is propelled by the same 2.5-litre turbo-intercooled petrol four-cylinder boxer engine found in the WRX STI spec.R model. Belting out 221kW at 6000rpm and 407Nm at 4000rpm, the V8-rivalling small sedan pumps its power through a six-speed manual to all four wheels.

Subaru claims the 0-100km/h sprint takes just 5.2 seconds and although the world has been eagerly awaiting the next-gen Subaru WRX STI, based on the Japanese brand's newer, more advanced global platform that underpins the regular Impreza.

That next WRX STI model is expected to debut in 2021 but we may see another concept car preview of the new model at the 2019 Tokyo motor show in late October.

The new Subaru WRX STI Kuro model will help generate interest in the iconic giant-slaying small car but only for a short time. Subaru needs an all-new model to rekindle the fire for the WRX, which in its current guise is getting old. Sales of WRX and STI models have dropped by 57 per cent in Australia thus far this year, from 1350 units in 2018 to just 578.

Like all Subaru models the WRX STI Kuro comes with a five-year warranty and capped price servicing.
