TOKYO MOTOR SHOW: Mazda previews next 3

Two Mazda concept cars confirmed to debut within two weeks

Mazda has confirmed it will stage the world debuts of two concept cars at the Tokyo motor show on October 26.

As you can see from these official teaser images (and as we forecast in August), one of them will be a thinly veiled preview of the next-generation Mazda3 due on sale next year.

The other concept will provide a glimpse of the next instalment in Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language, which will be presented as part of a “Celebrate Driving” theme.

Amid the global automotive industry’s current focus on autonomous vehicles, Mazda’s “determination to continue offering cars that celebrate the driving experience” suggest it could also point to the company’s born-again RX rotary sports car due by 2020.

“The design vision model embodies the concepts that will define the next generation of Mazda design, resulting in a more profound expression of the globally-acclaimed KODO design language Mazda debuted on the Mazda CX-5 in 2012,” said Mazda of the sleek design concept, which is likely to be an evolution of the 2015 RX Vision concept.

Meantime, Mazda has confirmed the compact hatchback “product concept model” that “fuses next-generation technology and design” is powered by the world’s first commercial petrol engine to use compression ignition (HCCI).

“Dynamic performance has been dramatically refined and next-generation design condensed to create Mazda’s ideal compact hatchback,” said Mazda.

“In August, we announced our Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 long-term vision for technology development, setting out how Mazda hopes to use driving pleasure, the fundamental appeal of the automobile, to help solve issues facing people, the earth and society,” said Masamichi Kogai, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO.

“The vision commits Mazda to make substantive cuts in CO2 emissions, and we believe the best way to achieve this is to reduce emissions under real-world conditions while offering a mix of combustion engines and electrification technologies in consideration of each region’s energy situation and energy mix.

“Our stand this year marks the beginning of a new era for Mazda. We will showcase a concept model with the design and technologies that will define a whole new generation of Mazda cars. Among them is SKYACTIV-X, a gasoline engine that realises a long-held dream of the global automotive industry.”

Also on display will be the CX-8 seven-seat diesel SUV that goes on sale in Japan in December, and a special-edition MX-5 Red Top featuring a dark cherry red canopy and auburn Nappa leather trim.
