Toyota patents twin-turbo V8

New biturbo V8 could deliver up to 450kW and 750Nm in next Toyota LandCruiser and range of Lexus F models

Toyota has filed a US patent for a new twin-turbo V8 that could power the new Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series and Tundra pick-up, plus the Lexus IS F, RC F, GS F, LS F and LC F.

Submitted in September 2020 but not published until yesterday (May 6), the US patent filing – first reported by GR86.org – clearly shows and describes a V8 with a pair of turbochargers mounted at the top of the engine.

However, Toyota says the engine, which is expected to be a DOHC petrol V8 displacing 4.0 litres, could also be produced in single-turbo form, and with the turbocharger/s mounted beside the cylinder block/s.

Interestingly, the patent reveals the new engine architecture can also be produced in V6 or even inline four-cylinder or six-cylinder form, saying it “has been described using the V-eight engine as an example of the internal combustion engine”.

“However, the number of cylinders arranged in the cylinder block is not limited in particular. For example, the internal combustion engine may be, for example, a V-six engine,” the patent reads.

“Besides, the cylinders may not necessarily be arranged in a V-shape but may be arranged in line. That is, an in-line four-cylinder engine, an in-line six-cylinder engine or the like may be adopted as the internal combustion engine.”

A new petrol V8 to replace the Toyota’s long-running naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8 (351kW/530Nm) has been rumoured since 2017 and Toyota luxury brand Lexus revealed back in December 2019 that it was developing a twin-turbo V8 for its high-performance F models.

In a late-2019 press release ahead of the 2020 Nurburgring 24 Hour endurance race, Lexus said its LC race car will make use of a range of new technologies “including a newly-developed V8 twin-turbo engine destined for use on future road cars such as sports cars”.

The new biturbo V8 will likely produce up to 450kW of power and 750Nm of torque, eclipsing not only the engine it replaces but the 310kW/600Nm 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 that currently powers the Lexus LS 500 limousine.

Therefore Toyota’s first twin-turbo petrol V8 is expected to be fitted to the first Lexus LS F, as well as the Japanese luxury brand’s flagship LC F sports car, replacements for the mid-size RC F performance coupe and large GS F sports sedan, and the new Lexus IS F , which could finally make it a direct competitor for the Mercedes-AMG C 63.

It’s also likely the new biturbo V8 will power not only the next Lexus LX luxury SUV and the new Toyota Tundra pick-up that’s under consideration for Australia, but a hard-core GR flagship for the next Toyota LandCruiser.

The 2022 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series will be released in Australia later this year exclusively with a new circa-230kW/690kW 3.3-litre V6 turbo-diesel, which will eventually be joined by its first hybrid powertrain, based around the biturbo 3.5-litre petrol V6 offered in the new LC300 in other markets.
