Toyota Racing Development (TRD) – the Japanese car-making giant’s official factory performance division – has revealed a range of go-faster bits for the born-again Toyota Supra.
These include aerodynamic enhancements including new 19-inch forged alloy wheels and a carbon-fibre front spoiler, rear wing, rear spats, side skirts and door garnishes.
Revealed today in Japan, the bolt-on aero aids could become available as genuine Toyota accessories for the new-generation Supra, which arrives in Australia by September.
This is despite the fact the TRD brand was killed off Down Under long ago and the fact the new A90-series Supra will be the first model sold under Toyota’s new GR (GAZOO Racing) performance sub-brand.
All of the TRD body parts you see here were revealed on the GR Supra Performance Line Concept TRD, which at this stage remains a concept car.
There’s no doubt that if they do grace the official Toyota Australia parts catalogue (and that remains a big if), the lightweight carbon extras will add more aggression – and presumably speed -- to Toyota’s new flagship sports car.
This is thanks to a large front splitter that wraps around to the front wheel-arches and a sharp bootlid spoiler, with edgy side skirts and door extensions between the multi-spoke alloys and rear spats book-ending the twin exhaust outlets.
TRD provides a range of images indicating the newly developed components also increase downforce and stability, while reducing lift and turbulence.
At this stage there’s no word on any official TRD enhancements for the GR Supra’s BMW-sourced 250kW/500Nm 3.0-litre inline turbo-six, or its suspension or braking systems.
However, the official TRD Japan website notes that the GR Supra Performance Line Concept story is “to be continued”, so watch this space.
