Unique Ford Mustang to be auctioned for Camp Quality

Children's cancer charity Camp Quality gives you the chance to own a Scott McLaughlin ‘piece of history'

One of the most memorable Ford Mustangs in Scott McLaughlin’s time at the top of Supercars is heading to auction.

It’s the demonstration car that the triple champion lapped in Adelaide alongside touring car legends Dick Johnson and Marcos Ambrose in 2019.

Proceeds from the sale will go to kids facing cancer through the Camp Quality charity.

The car will be the focus of an online auction through Shannons that closes at 7:00pm on Wednesday, October 21.

The Mustang’s unique specification, and its place in history, should ensure a heated bidding war and the early estimate is a sale price between $55,000 and $75,000.

It comes as the Ford Mustang shares the spotlight with Holden’s ZB Commodore at Mount Panorama for this year’s Bathurst 1000.

The McLaughlin car from Adelaide was uniquely prepared after starting life as a Ford Australia executive ride and the whole experience created a lasting memory for McLaughlin.

“Sharing the track with two Ford legends like Dick and Marcos was a hell of an experience and one I'll never forget. To now see the car being auctioned with all proceeds going to Camp Quality is just awesome.”

He was particularly impressed by the suspension tune-up by the Ford tuning gurus at Herrod Automotive.

"I just remember first driving that Mustang around the streets of Adelaide and asking Rob Herrod what he did to it as it rode the curbs really well.”

The idea for the Camp Quality auction came from Ryan Story, who is a Camp Quality ambassador but has the day job as team principal for McLaughlin’s Shell V-Power Racing squad.

“This year has been tough for everyone, but it hasn't stopped the important work Camp Quality do to support sick kids with cancer and their families,” Story said.

“This Mustang is a very special car, not to mention being the only one Scott has raced that he hasn't won in. This specific car was part of the launch of the Mustang Supercar and Ford coming back into Supercars in a big way. It holds a place in history.”

“Along with being driven by Scott, raced against Marcos Ambrose in a NASCAR and Dick Johnson in the Mustang Supercar, this special car was also tuned and prepared by Ford legend Rob Herrod. I have no doubt that this historic Mustang will find a good home.”

The Mustang arrived at Ford Australia in 2018 with the factory-fitted options of 19-inch forged aluminium alloy wheels, MagnaRide suspension and Recaro seating.

The extra upgrades for the Speed Comparison track laps included special Ford Performance/Mustang exterior graphics, specially-painted alloys, a half-roll cage, a four-point racing harness, a rear-seat delete kit, ARP front and rear wheel hubs with ARP studs, a fire extinguisher and a factory spoiler.

The Speed Comparison Mustang had just 12,301km on the clock at the time of cataloguing by Shannons. It will come with an engineer’s certificate.

As McLaughlin prepares for the next step in his career, in IndyCar racing in the USA, he is giving the car his personal seal of approval.

“It’s a fabulous car,” he said.
