Upgraded Hyundai i30 N will be pricier

Facelifted Hyundai hot hatch brings first auto option – for a price

Hot hatch fans rejoice! Australian pricing and specs have been announced for the upgraded 2021 Hyundai i30 N, which brings more power, a slick new eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission and all of the updates seen on the facelifted Hyundai i30 hatch range released last October.

Like the 2021 Hyundai i30, however, the revised i30 N performance flagship also brings higher price tags, in this case a starting price of $44,500 plus on-road costs for the base i30 N manual.

That’s $3100 more than the i30 N Performance model it replaces ($41,400 plus ORCs), but still $8600 less than the new auto-only Volkswagen Golf GTI ($53,100 plus ORCs), which also arrives in showrooms next month.

The first automatic Hyundai i30 N will command a $3000 premium at $47,500 plus ORCs, while a new Premium variant wears the same sticker price as a manual and costs a cool $52,000 plus ORCs as an auto – including a sunroof, which is a $1500 option on the i30 N Premium manual.

Dark Knight and Phantom Black mica paint is a $495 option across the range.

There’s no sign yet of the first Hyundai i30 N sedan, which is yet to be revealed but will be based on the new i30 sedan and is likely to replace the i30 Fastback N when it arrives here around October.

As we’ve reported, the 2021 Hyundai i30 N hatchback’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine now develops 206kW of power at 6000rpm and 392Nm of torque over 2100-4700rpm with either transmission – up 4kW and 39Nm on the manual-only model it replaces.

Hyundai lists a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.4 seconds – 0.7sec or 11 per cent quicker than the outgoing manual – and a 250km/h top speed for both transmissions.

Both models also offer unique carryover features including rev matching, launch control and a rear bar to increase body stiffness, while the DCT version adds steering wheel paddle shifters and three new N performance functions: N Grin Shift, N Power Shift and N Track Sense Shift.

N Grin Shift releases maximum power for 20 seconds and is activated via a button on the steering wheel and accompanied by a countdown meter in the instrument cluster.

N Power Shift engages when the car accelerates with more than 90 per cent of throttle, reducing torque reduction during upshifts, while N Track Sense Shift activates automatically when it recognises that road conditions are optimal for dynamic driving.

As before, the N Grin Control System offers five driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom) that adjust the parameters of the engine, suspension, stability control, exhaust, steering, transmission and the electronically-controlled ‘N Corner Carving (front limited-slip) Differential’.

In the N Custom mode, drivers can select from Eco, Normal, Sport and Sport+ settings for each of these attributes.

Elsewhere, new 19-inch forged alloy wheels are claimed to be 14.4kg lighter than the current model’s cast wheels, and their dark satin grey matte finish contrasts with N-specific red brake callipers with N logo.

Model-specific Pirelli P Zero tyres are also standard, while front brake discs have grown from 345mm to 360mm to improve braking performance.

Optional new monoform N Light sports bucket seats are said to be 2.2kg lighter than the standard seats, bringing more lateral support, premium leather and Alcantara trim (instead of the standard model’s black cloth) with Performance Blue stitching and an illuminated N logo on an integrated head restraint.

The N Light seats come standard in Premium variants, which also add front parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, rear privacy glass, an electro-chromatic interior mirror and a heated steering wheel and front seats.

These features are in addition to all of the safety and tech equipment previously offered in the Hyundai i30 N, plus new items including a 10.25-inch infotainment touch-screen, wireless charging pad for Qi smartphones, keyless entry/push-button start, power-folding exterior mirrors and LED courtesy and puddle lights.

On the safety front, additions include lane following assist and, for DCT models, blind spot collision warning and rear cross traffic alert.

How much does the 2021 Hyundai i30 N hatch cost?
i30 N – $44,500
i30 N DCT – $47,500
i30 N Premium – $47,500
i30 N DCT Premium with sunroof – $52,000
*All prices exclude on-road costs
