Volvo Cars Australia has confirmed the new Volvo XC40 Recharge will arrive in local showrooms in the first half of next year.
The Swedish marque’s first all-electric model will be the first of five Volvo EVs due in the next five years, as the company looks to bolster an already-formidable hybrid range, comprising mild-hybrids, conventional hybrids and plug-in hybrid models.
In Australia, Volvo has begun its ‘Recharge’ journey via a swag of new models including the XC90 plug-in hybrid and the XC40 plug-in hybrid.
Today, Volvo Cars Australia spokesman Greg Bosnich said the XC40 EV would join Volvo’s local ranks in early 2021.
“The pure-electric XC40 will arrive in the first half of 2021,” he said, adding “it’s too early to talk about price and specifications at this point but we will communicate that in due course.”
According to Volvo, the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8, as it's officially named, is the first of five models to be launched by the Swedish company in the next five years.
Driven by two electric motors that provide all-wheel drive, the electrically-assisted XC40 generates a considerable 300kW and 660Nm, propelling it to 100km/h in a rapid-fire 4.9 seconds.
Powered by a 78kWh lithium-ion battery located beneath the floor between both axles, Volvo claims the XC40 Recharge can cover a WLTP-verified 400km between charges.
Inside, the electrified XC40 gains Volvo’s latest infotainment system powered by Google Android, along with familiar proportions as its existing internal combustion siblings.
Pricing for the new model has not been announced but it will command a premium over the current XC40 price range of $46,990 to $56,990.
